Ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa

Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa Ancient City

Step back into the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa, with the Royal Palace, the Gal Vihara rock carvings and other ancient monuments.

Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's royal capital between the 11th and 13th centuries, and its ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Sigiriya, it is a short drive to explore highlights such as the Royal Palace area and the Gal Vihara, with its giant Buddha figures carved from a single rock. After lunch, continue to more ruins or the museum before returning to Sigiriya.

Route: Sigiriya → Polonnaruwa → Sigiriya

Best for history, archaeology and culture. The ancient city is spread out, so we arrange transport between the ruins and allow time for the heat, walking and ticketing.
